Meanings come from Luther’s Small Catechism.  Notice the Bible includes more than the catechism.  The Catechism contains only a summary of the commandments.

  The First Commandment:

“You shall have no other gods.”   What does this mean?  “We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.”

Wednesday October 16:  5:30 PM

 The Second Commandment: 

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.”

What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray praise, and give thanks.”

The Third Commandment: October 30

“Remember the Sabbath Day by Keeping it Holy”

 What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it

   Elective Memory (7th & 8th):  Philippians 2:10-11 “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (1 Point)

Wednesday November 6—5:30 PM

 The Fourth Commandment: 

“Honor your father and your mother.”

 What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.”

 Optional Memory (7th & 8th):  “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise-- 3 "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."  Ephesians 6:1-3 (3 Point)

 Wednesday November 13—5:30 PM

The Fifth Commandment:

“You shall not murder.”

 What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him his every physical need.”

 Elective Memory Verse (7th & 8th): “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:44b-45  (1 Point)

Wednesday November 20—5:30 PM

 The Sixth Commandment: November 22

“You shall not commit adultery.”

 What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do and husband and wife love and honor each other.”

  Elective Memory Verse (7th & 8th):  “You have heard that it was said, `Do not commit adultery.' 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”  Matthew 5:27-28

Wednesday November 27 —5:30 PM

The Seventh Commandment:

“You shall not steal.”

What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbors money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.”

Wednesday December 4—5:30 PM

 The Eighth Commandment:

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”

 What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.”

Wednesday December 11—5:30 PM

The Ninth Commandment: 

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.”

What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor’s wife, workers, or animals or get them in a way which only appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it.”

The Tenth Commandment:

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

What does this mean?  “We should fear and love God so that we do not entice or force away our neighbor’s wife, workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty.”

Wednesday December 20—5:30 PM – Caroling – Come with a Coat!  We will go to Bickford Cottage, Northern Hills, Pheasant Acres, and other places that request our presence! 

Elective Memory:  “If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.  People want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and  harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. . .”  I Timothy 6:8-10 (2 Points)
